LE HAKA Explanation |
||
There
were many kinds of hakas at the time pre-European, according to occasions.
There were hakas of song and joy, and hakas of war, hakasof "utu", (revenge) which one danced before leaving to the battle. The hakas of war were of two types: That which one danced without weapon, to generally express personal or collective feelings, and which was the "haka taparahi", and that which one danced with the weapons, the"haka peruperu". One danced the "haka peruperu", traditionally, before leaving to the battle, with the weapons used to make the war. It was a way of calling upon the god of the war, and of informing the enemy of the fate which awaited it. |
